Doha’s Stadium 974 thrummed to the samba beat on Monday night as Brazilian fans brought Latin American swagger to this patch of Qatar and Casemiro fired Brazil into the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup finals with a 1-0 victory over Switzerland.
The midfielder’s spectacular 83rd minute goal sent Brazil through with a game to spare and lit a touch paper to a contest that up to then had struggled to smoulder.
“Thank God we scored that goal,” Casemiro said. “We were patient…it was an annoying game.”
But the sea of Brazilian fans will not care about any of that as 80 or so minutes of sloppy passing and directionless play was forgotten in the hysteria of the final minutes.
Tens of thousands of yellow shirts had painted the inside of this quirky stadium bright yellow, broken up only by small pockets of local fans in traditional white robes and a smattering of red Swiss shirts.
It was hard to believe this was a match being played on the Arabian Peninsula, for it had every setting of a home game for the Brazilians – from the thunderous roars accompanying every fancy move to the rhythmic beat drummed out throughout.
But if the supporters had planned for a party, the student of soccer might well have suspected otherwise. The two previous World Cup meetings between these two sides had ended in draws – 2-2 in 1950, and 1-1 in 2018.
The Brazilians had only won three of their nine match-ups with Switzerland in total, with four drawn and two losses.
This Monday night clash looked to be heading for another stalemate before Casemiro’s moment of pure magic – one which saw him named man-of-the-match.
With Brazil increasingly desperate, half-time substitute Rodrygo played a first time ball to Casemiro who struck it with the outside of his foot and it glided – in time-honoured Brazilian fashion – past Yann Sommer in goal.
The Swiss keeper could only watch in horror as the ball bulged the side of the inside of his goal. Cue cacophony.
But while Rodrygo provided the assist, Casemiro and Brazil owe the bigger debt of gratitude to Vinicius Jr for the goal – Brazil’s newest superstar had drawn three increasingly desperate defenders onto him in a smart move which created rare space for the goal.
As important as Monday’s victory was for Brazil, perhaps of more importance was the performance of Vinicius Jr – Vini to his team mates.
The 22-year-old underlined his credentials as the perfect replacement for Neymar, a player who seems to physically break down every time Brazil need him the most.
The PSG superstar missed Monday’s match and is unable to play the final dead group game as he recovers from yet another ankle injury suffered in Brazil’s debut against Serbia.
But with a plug-and-play genius like Vinicius Jr ready to take on the mantle of chief playmaker, Tite and the whole of Brazil can rest easy.
Winded by a cruel moment of Brazilian brilliance, the Swiss slumped and the match could well have ended two or 3-0, but that would have been unduly harsh on the Europeans who, for the most part, blunted their opponents.
The Swiss, though, can take heart from their performance and a win against Serbia in their final group match will send them through along with Brazil, and a draw could even be enough.
“I cant really blame the team, they did a good job today,” said Swiss coach Murat Yakin.
“We have a lot of good takeaways for the next game – one we have control over.”

Black Stars midfielder, Kudus Mohammed was named man-of-the-match in Ghana’s win over South Korea at Education City Stadium.
Kudus netted a brace in an entertaining 3-2 win over Asians in their second Group H encounter at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Ajax put on a show and propelled Ghana to their first win of the tournament, taking his tally to 2 goals and an assist in two games.
Kudus and Mohammed Salisu gave Ghana a 2-0 first-half lead before South Korea pulled parity within two minutes in the second half through two headers by Cho.
Kudus reclaimed the lead for Ghana on the 68 minutes, beautifully connecting Gideon Mensah’s cross from the left.
Ghana, following the win, have now moved to second in the group, trailing Portugal based on goals.
Former Manchester United forward, Owen Hargreaves has showered praise on Jordan Ayew, describing his performance against South Korea as a ‘Beckham-like’ performance.
The Crystal Palace forward orcastrated Ghana’s two goals against the Asian side in their second Group H game staged at the Education City Stadium.
Jordan assisted Ghana’s first goal scored by Mohammed Salisu on the 24th minute before assisting Mohammed Kudus’ goal in the 34th minute.
Speaking on the performance of the 29-year-old, the former English forward lauded the former Swansea City forward, saying he performed like David Beckham.
“Jordan Ayew played like Beckham. That cross and performance from him is simply perfect,” he said on SuperSport.
The Black Stars have three points following the impressive win.
Ghana will take on Uruguay in their final group game on Friday at the Al Janoub Stadium with kick-off scheduled at 15:00GMT.
The West African country are seeking to make it to the next round after exiting the group phase in the 2014 edition hosted in Brazil.
Black Stars and St. Gallen shot-stopper Lawrence Ati Zigi produced a goalkeeping masterclass as Ghana beat South Korea in a Group H fixture in the 2022 World Cup.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper proved to be a barrier against Koreans attack in a nerve-shredding second fixture.
Ghana defeated the Asians 3-2 courtesy goals from Mohammed Salisu and a brace from Mohammed Kudus.
Zigi played the entire duration of the game and made 4 crucial saves, 5 recoveries and 27 touches to help Ghana record their first win in the tournament.

The West African country today locked horns with the Asians in a second Group H match of this year’s mundial.
Although the South Koreans will dominate the play in the early parts of the game, Ghana managed the pressure and eventually took control of the game.
Doing better in the attacking sequence, the Black Stars took the lead in the 24th minute when defender Mohammed Salisu capitalised on a scramble in the opponent’s box to get the ball in the back of the net.
With that lead, Ghana continued to see more of the possession and made it count 10 minutes later.
This time around, Mohammed Kudus jumped high to head a cross from Jordan Ayew to double the lead for the Black Stars.
While Ghana will take the two-goal lead into the break, South Korea made a strong comeback in the second half as a brace from Gue-sung Cho in the 58th and 61st minutes restored parity to the game.
Despite losing confidence after squandering the comfortable lead, Ghana gradually found its mojo and made it count.
In the 68th minute, poster boy Mohammed Kudus latched onto a pass from Gideon Mensah and smashed a low drive that ended up in the back of the South Korea net.
Despite the late pressure from South Korea, Ghana held on to win 3-2 to bag the maximum three points.
Coach Otto Addo has made three changes to the starting line up for the match against South Korea on Monday.
Brighton and Hove Albion right back Tariq Lamptey has replaced Alidu Seidu, Gideon Mensah has taken the place of Baba Abdul Rahman at left back whiles Jordan Ayew gets the nod in place of Alexander Djiku who played in a five back system against Portugal.
Salis Abdul Samed and Thomas Partey keep their place in midfield with Mohammed Kudus and Jordan Ayew set to operate on either wings while Captain Andre Ayew plays behind Inaki Williams.

Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakar came off the bench to score one goal and set up another as the Indomitable Lions rescued a vital point in a 3-3 draw with Serbia on Monday that ended a run of eight successive World Cup losses for the African side.
The roller-coaster Group G fixture leaves both teams on a single point from their two games, still in contention for a last 16 place, although Cameroon must face Brazil in their final match on Friday, while Serbia take on Switzerland.
Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic said it felt like two points lost after they let a 3-1 advantage slip. But for Cameroon, who stopped the rot in their World Cup results dating back to 2002, it breathes life back into their campaign.
“In these competitions you have to show desire for victory,” Aboubakar said. “My teammates played a great first half despite some small mistakes. We felt they (Serbia) were shaky and a bit tired. When I came on, I tried to make the most of it.
“What matters is the mindset and the collective spirit, and in that regard we played a great game.”
Cameroon were without first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana, who asked to leave the squad according to coach Rigobert Song, amid reports that the pair had a falling out over tactics.
“He is an important player but we are in a difficult tournament,” Song said. “I know what I have to do, and that is to ensure that the team takes precedence over any individuals. Andre wanted to step out (of the squad) and we accepted that position. In a squad, discipline is important.”
It was Serbia who had started the match looking like the brighter side. Alexander Mitrovic struck the post when his quick footwork created a shooting chance from a tight angle.
He had another huge opportunity when Cameroon made a hash of clearing their lines and the ball fell to him eight yards out with the goal at his mercy, but he fired wide.
Cameroon then took the lead from a set-piece. Jean-Charles Castelletto got on the end of Nicolas N’Koulou’s flick to tap home at the back post.
But they never looked comfortable at the back and Serbia levelled in first half injury-time. Dusan Tadic floated a free-kick into the box and Strahinja Pavlovic rose highest to direct the ball into the corner of the net.
They grabbed the lead two minutes later when the Cameroon defence allowed Sergej Milinkovic-Savic time to pick his spot from the edge of the box and he steered the ball into the net.
The third for Serbia was a beautifully worked goal started and finished by Mitrovic. He drove towards the penalty box and after a succession of passes inside the area, the ball was squared by Andrija Zivkovic and the burly number nine had a simple tap-in for his seventh goal in his last six caps.
“At that stage we had absolute control of the match,” Stojkovic said. “But we were not smart enough to see out the match. We created a lot of opportunities and scored three goals, but couldn’t finish it off.”
The third Serbian goal was the cue for the arrival of Aboubakar off the bench. First he provided a perfect chip into the net for 3-2, then he beat the offside trap, raced clear and whipped over a low cross for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to level the tie and throw Cameroon a lifeline in the competition.
“That is part of our DNA as Cameroon footballers and it was maybe what was missing in the first match (against Switzerland),” Song said.
“It is possible to beat Brazil. We believe in ourselves, we did not come here to just go through the motions. Cameroon still has a contribution to make to this tournament.”
Stojkovic was also confident his side can still progress.
“In the dressing room we are calm. Yes, we regret the mistakes we made, but the players should not lose their heads over it. We seem to like to take the difficult road.
“We will do the best we can to play attacking football and try to win (against Switzerland).”
