Hearts of Oak mutually part ways with William Opoku Asiedu

Hearts of Oak have mutually parted ways with midfielder William Opoku Asiedu, the club announced on Friday.

The forward joined the Phobians in 2021 on a two-year deal and was expected to play a huge role for the Ghanaian giants.

Following an unimpressive spell, the hierarchy of the club has decided to part ways with the young forward.

“Accra Hearts of Oak has mutually parted ways with William Opoku Asiedu a player of the club.

We thank him for his services whilst at the club and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors” a statement from the club reads.

William Opoku featured for Middlesbrough U23 in 2017 after joining the club from Division One League outfit Okyeman Planners.

The English Championship outfit loaned him out to Estonian top-flight league side FCI Levadia but his contract was abrogated following his poor performance.

He later moved to India where he featured for several clubs such as Minerva Punjab, Ozone FC, FC Bengaluru United, Bhawanipore FC and BSS Sporting.

His last stint was at Nepal Super League club Butwal Lumbini FC.

Fifa appoint Szymon Marciniak to officiate 2022 World Cup final

Polish referee Szymon Marciniak will take charge of Sunday’s 2022 Fifa World Cup final between France and Argentina, Fifa announced on Thursday.

The 41-year-old has already officiated matches involving both teams at the tournament – Argentina’s last-16 win over Australia and France’s group-stage victory against Denmark.

Marciniak’s assistants in Sunday’s match will be compatriots Pawel Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz.

The three have already overseen matches at the Under-18 world championships and the Euros in 2016.

The Argentina-France clash at Lusail Stadium kicks off at 15:00 GMT.

Prince Tagoe offers advise to Afriyie Barnieh on Heart of Oak contract renewal saga

Former Hearts of Oak forward Prince Tagoe has advised Daniel Afriyie Barnieh not to rush to leave the club.

Daniel Afriyie Barnieh is reportedly on the verge of leaving Hearts of Oak on a free agent after turning down numerous contract offers from the club.

Barnieh’s contract at the club he joined as a free agent in December 2020 will expire at the end of this month, thus the Phobians will lose him for free if an agreement cannot be reached between the two parties.

However, Prince Tagoe who was part of the Hearts of Oak team that won the 2004 CAF Confederations has advised Barnieh to be patient and not be in a rush to leave the club.

“I rejected an offer from PSG in 2006 to complete a season at Hearts of Oak and I was the Top Scorer.

“I moved to Saudi for €2m the following year and had good offers from Europe. Afriyie Barnieh shouldn’t rush to leave Hearts of Oak,” said Prince Tagoe said on Angel TV.

Black Galaxies beat Legon Cities in friendly

Ghana’s local national team, the Black Galaxies defeated Legon Cities 2-0 in a friendly encounter at the Ghanaman Soccer Center in Prampram.

The Black Galaxies grabbed their first goal in the 2nd minute through Dreams FC’s Sylvester Simba, before Evans Osei Wusu of Tema Youth doubled the score in the 36th minute.

The two teams used the friendly game to prepare for their upcoming assignments. Legon Cities are preparing for the resumption of the Premier League on Monday, December 19, while the Black Galaxies are preparing for the 2022 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) to be played in Algeria from Friday, January 13 to Saturday, February 4, 2023.

Ghana has been pitted in Group C for the group stages of the CHAN alongside holders Morocco, two-time bronze winners Sudan and debutants Madagascar.

The Black Galaxies will kickoff their campaign against Madagascar on Sunday, January 15, before playing Sudan on Thursday, January 19 and Morocco on Monday, January 23.

Hearts of Oak tell captain Mohammed Fatawu, Mohammed Alhassan to find new clubs

Hearts of Oak have reportedly informed Fatawu Mohammed and Mohammed Alhassan that they have no future with them and would have to look for new clubs phobianews.com can exclusively disclose.

The two players have been essentially cast aside since the arrival of Slavko Matic, with Alhassan losing his position to Robert Addo Sowah and Fatawu to Samuel Inkoom.

Matic is understood not to be convinced of the qualities of Fatawu and Alhassan and has duly informed the hierarchy of the club of his decision not to have the two players in his team when the league resumes.

This news will surely come as a shock to many a Hearts fan since the two have since their arrival at the club been loyal to the cause of the club.

Hearts of Oak confirm Cape Coast Stadium as new home venue ahead of GPL return

Spokesperson of Hearts of Oak, Kwame Opare Addo has confirmed the club will not be using the Accra Sports Stadium when the league resumes next week.

The stadium has been rented for Christmas activities, forcing the National Sports Authority to move games from Accra to other venues.

According to Opare Addo, Hearts of Oak received a letter from the NSA that the stadium has been closed until January 7.

“The NSA has written to notify us that the Accra sports stadium is closed until after 7th January,” Opare Addo told Ghanasaportspage.com.

This means Hearts of Oak, Accra Lions and Accra Great Olympics will have to find alternative venues for their upcoming games.

Accra Lions have adopted the Cape Coast stadium while Olympics are reported that have made agreed on playing at the Red Bull Arena in Sogakope.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been using Real Madrid’s training base to keep fit after Portugal’s World Cup exit.  

After his contract at Manchester United was cancelled last month, Ronaldo is free to join another club on 1 January.  

Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr have made a big-money offer for the 37-year-old forward, although it is understood he has other options.  

Ronaldo’s second spell at Manchester United was brought to a premature end after a controversial interview in which the five-time Ballon d’Or winner criticised the club and said he had “no respect” for manager Erik ten Hag.  

That came two days before Portugal began their World Cup campaign and Ronaldo started their first three games, reacting angrily when he was substituted in the final group game against South Korea.  

The Portuguese Football Federation denied that Ronaldo threatened to leave the squad after being told he would not start the last-16 game against Switzerland, and his replacement Goncalo Ramos went on to score a hat-trick in a 6-1 win.  

The tournament in Qatar was expected to be Ronaldo’s last chance to win a World Cup, and he came off the bench against Switzerland and Morocco but could not prevent the African side knocking out Portugal.  

That 1-0 upset in the quarter-finals could be Ronaldo’s last World Cup game and he said on social media: “The dream was nice while it lasted”.  

In asking Real to use their training facility rather than take a break following Portugal’s early exit, Ronaldo has given a clear indication he is ready to join a new club at the earliest opportunity.  

However, that will not be Real, whose all-time leading scorer is Ronaldo with 450 goals in 438 games, during time which he won the Champions League four times and La Liga twice.  

Ronaldo made a then-world-record move to Real from Manchester United in 2009 and left for Juventus in 2018.  

Ronaldo trained alone at Real’s Valdebebas base and there is no option of a return to the Spanish club.

Ghanaian politician Haruna Iddrisu buys Premier League side Karela United

Astute politician Haruna Iddrisu has completed the acquisition of financially-stricken Ghana Premier League side Karela United claims GHANASoccernet.com.

This means the Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament and representative for Tamale South Constituency, who owns Division One League side Steadfast FC, has secured the top-flight status of the Nzema-Aiyinase-based side.

Ghana’s leading football website, www.ghanasoccernet.com, understands the deal was stitched up even before the 2022 FIFA World Cup break.

It is expected that the new owners will relocate the club to the Northern part of Ghana and continue playing in the Ghana top-flight.

But it is unknown if the change of name will happen anytime soon or until the end of the season.

After eight rounds of matches, Karela United are 14th on the table with 10 points from the available 24.

In 2010, then Ghana Premier League campaigners Kessben FC was acquired by business mogul Moses Parker in a reported US$ 600,000 deal and was re-christened Medeama after the Abankese-based club was moved to Tarkwa.

Three years ago (2019), former Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi sold his Wa All Stars to businessman Richard Kings Atikpo who renamed it Legon Cities FC and are currently competing in the Ghana Premier League as an Accra-based side.

Karela United have faced financial difficulties since the death of rich owner Senator David Brigidi in 2018.

The former Nigerian senator bought Metro Stars FC in October 2013 and with financial injection, he qualified the team to elite division five years.

He was the owner of Karela Oil & Gas in Ghana and Nigeria, Karela Hotels & Resort Ghana, Re-Routine Air Limited, Adef Energy Services, Shores & Savannah (Law Partners) and South Field Petroleum.
