Hearts Of Oak duo Amankwah and Suraj dropped from Black Galaxies squad for 2022 CHAN tournament

Coach Annor Walker has narrowed down his options to 25 players as the Black Galaxies head to Egypt for 18 days to fine-tune preparations for the Algeria 2022 Championship of African Nations (CHAN).

After the initial 40 players were called up for this tournament, a few more players including Sherif Mohammed, Razak Yusif and Caleb Amankwah were added to the team.

But Caleb Amankwah and his Hearts of Oak teammate Suraj Seidu – who played a key role in the qualifying campaign – are big names who have been omitted from Saturday’s trip to Cairo.

The 2022 edition of the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) is scheduled to begin on January 13 and culminate on February 4, 2023, at the Baraki Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.

Ghana, a member of Group C, will be based in Constantine and play all its matches at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium.

The Black Galaxies kick-start their campaign against Madagascar on Sunday, January 15 before taking on Sudan (third-place finishers in 2011 and 2018) in their second game four days later.

Ghana and Morocco – who have won the last two editions – will then meet in their final group match on Monday, January 23.

All three of Ghana’s group games have the same kickoff time – 20:00 GMT.

Coach Annor Walker has settled on twenty-five players for the pre-tournament trip to Egypt for the 2022 CHAN tournament in Algeria.

The Black Galaxies will depart Accra on Saturday, December 24, 2022 for Cairo where they would camp for 18-days ahead of the Championship of African Nations tournament that kicks off in Algeria on Friday, January 13, 2022.

The team will play a number of friendly matches in Cairo to smooth out the rough edges before travelling to Algeria for the biennial championship.

The Black Galaxies are paired with Madagascar, Sudan and Morocco in Group C.

Armed Forces honour Ghana’s World Cup star Mohammed Kudus

The Ghana Armed Forces have acknowledged Kudus Mohammed of the Black Stars for his efforts at the just-completed Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The award was presented to the promising star by the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

With two goals and one assist in three games against Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay, the Ajax attacker stood out for the Black Stars in Group H.

After scoring a brace in Ghana’s 3-2 win over South Korea, the 21-year-old became the first Ghanaian player to score twice in a World Cup game.

Despite Kudus’ highly rated performances, the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage after a 0-2 loss to Uruguay.

Kudus is preparing to resume the 2022-2023 season with Ajax Amsterdam after reuniting with his teammates.

This season, the former Nordsjaelland player has 10 goals and two assists in 21 games across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Kudus has been linked to several European clubs, including Barcelona, Dortmund, PSG and Chelsea.

GFA to roll out FIFA Youth Coaching Course in January 2023

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in collaboration with FIFA will roll out a Youth Coaching Course in January next year.

The course will take place from Monday, January 9 to Friday, January 13, 2023 at the GFA Technical Centre, the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, Prampram.

Twenty-five coaches have been selected from across the regions, the Ghana Premier League, the Division One League, and the Women’s Premier league clubs.

The course will be led by FIFA Instructor, Frans Mogashoa with support from GFA Director of Coach Education, Prof Joseph Kwame Mintah, and administrative manager of the Technical Directorate, Maxwell Caesar Kemeh.

The selected coaches are to report to the Ghanaman Soccer Centre on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at 4pm.

Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly expresses interest in Hearts of Oak talisman Daniel Afriyie Barnieh

Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC are reported to have contacted Hearts of Oak for the services of youngster Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, according to reports in the North African country. 

The contract of the former Ghana U-20 forward will expire at the end of this month, and the Ghanaian giants are sweating over whether to extend his stay. 

The 21-year-old is on the radar of several clubs in Africa and Europe following his involvement in Ghana’s World Cup in Qatar.


Barnieh made the Black Stars’ 26-man final squad list for the Mundial. It should be recalled that although he didn’t make any appearances at the World Cup, he was very impressive in Ghana’s last pre-World Cup game against Switzerland in Abu Dhabi, where Ghana secured a 2-0 win.

Al Ahly is reported to have been in contact with the Phobians over the possible transfer of the attacker, with negotiations already in place.

He is currently in camp with the Ghana national team, preparing for the upcoming CHAN tournament to be staged in Algeria next month. 

Barnieh was outstanding during the CHAN qualifications, netting three goals in four appearances against Benin and Nigeria.

Barnieh joined Hearts in July 2019 and has been an instrumental member of the team as he assisted them to win the Ghana Premier League and FA Cup in the 2020-21 season.

He was the captain when Ghana won the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Mauritania last year.

OFFICIAL: Gladson Awako extends contract with Hearts Of Oak

Gladson Awako has signed a new one year contract extension with Hearts of Oak.

The 31-year-old will have his contract with the Ghana Premier League powerhouse coming to an end in 2024 but will have an option to further extend his stay thereafter.

The Black Galaxies captain has been on a fine form since joining Hearts of Oak hence extending his contract.

The former Ghana U-20 star is currently in the national team camp with the Black Galaxies as they prepare for the CHAN tournament in early January in Algeria.

Awako captained the Black Galaxies to qualify for next year’s Tournament ahead of archrivals, Nigeria.


Gladson Awako joined Hearts of Oak in August, 2021 after explosive performance for city rivals Great Olympics.

Chelsea boss Christopher Ennin slams Mezack Afriyie’s poor performance against Kotoko

Berekum Chelsea coach Christopher Ennin was disappointed with the display of highly-rated striker Mezack Afriyie in their 2-1 defeat to Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League on Wednesday.

The Blues took the lead through Emmanuel Sarpong in the 27th minute but the Porcupine Warriors equalized on the half time mark courtesy of Eric Zeze’s strike.

Back from recess, Steven Mukwala increased the tally for Asante Kotoko in the 65th minute at the Baba Yara stadium.

“For Mezack Afriyie’s performance that is the question that I’m going to ask myself because I don’t know what was going on during his time with the national team.”

“He just rejoined us and what I saw is not the Afriyie that I was expecting. So I think maybe he had personal issues but, I’m going to see to it and correct it,” coach Ennin told StarTimes during the post-match interview.

Afriyie, who has scored five goals in eight matches for Berekum Chelsea lasted the entire duration of the game.

Zambia appoint ex-Ghana, Chelsea trainer Avram Grant as new head coach

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has unveiled former Ghana gaffer Avram Grant as the new head coach of the national team.

The former Chelsea trainer penned a two-year contract with an option for another year, and faces a daunted task to qualify the Chipolopolo to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Grant replaces Croatian gaffer Aljosa Asanovic who resigned in September 2022 after just nine months.

The former Portsmouth boss handled the Ghana national team in his previous job in Africa from December 2014 to February 2017, where he guided the Black Stars to the finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

He also led the Black Stars to the semi-finals of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, losing to eventual winners Cameroon.

During his spell as the manager of English giants Chelsea, Grant guided the London club to the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2008, where they lost to Manchester United on penalty shootouts.

Ghana move three places up in latest Coca-cola FIFA rankings

Ghana have improved slightly in the latest Fifa Rankings, which was released on Thursday.

The Black Stars have risen three places in the world rankings, to 58th from 61st.

Their improvement can be attributed to their pre-World Cup wins over Switzerland and then beating South Korea during the tournament in Qatar.

Black Stars, who are currently without a coach following Otto Addo’s resignation after their World Cup campaign ended early, garnered 1400 points.

Meanwhile, the four-time African champions are ranked 11th in Africa.

After Morocco’s incredible run in Qatar, they have moved to 11th place in the world, and are now number one in Africa, taking over from Senegal.

They became the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals, defeating Belgium, Canada, Spain, and Portugal en route.

Ghana will return to action next year with a new coach.

Afriyie Barnieh removed from Black Galaxies as Hearts Of Oak give up on contract extension talks with the player

After a fruitless attempt to extend the contract of striker Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Hearts of Oak have given up.

In the end, the team chose to remove Barnieh’s name off its roster of players actively training with the Black Galaxies.

A highly placed source in Hearts told the Daily Graphic on Tuesday that Barnieh is free to depart if he so desire because the club had finally given up trying to persuade the 21-year-old striker to renew his contract.

The source said Hearts could no longer countenance the ingrate character of the player and that if that was how he wished to pay back a club that brought him to prominence, he was at liberty to leave.

“He (Barnieh) has still not signed a new contract and I had a discussion with the board chairman that if he doesn’t sign, nobody should call him; he should be allowed to go but his conscience would be his own judge.

“If you can treat a club that brought you to prominence that way, then he can go because we made all the efforts we could for over three months, explaining to him the need to sign but he kept on dilly-dallying with us with his so-called manager, so if he wants to go he can go,” it said.

The source intimated that because the player did not want to play for the club, that was why he was dragging his feet in signing a new contract. Due to that, they had excluded him from the list of players the club submitted to the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

“He wouldn’t like to sign and the only reason he wouldn’t like to sign is that he doesn’t want to play for the club, but one thing I’m sure about is that his name is not on the list of players we submitted to the FA,” it further revealed.

Barnieh’s contract is due to expire at the end of this month and the player has refused to pen his signature to a new deal as reports indicate that several foreign clubs are pursuing him.
