Asante Kotoko got stunned by Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday evening on match-week 23 of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupines failed to capitalize on the 2-2 draw between Aduana and RTU to reduce the leaders’ gap from five points to three points

They lost 0-2 to the Yellow and Mauves and this is their third defeat in the last five games.

Jonathan Sowah scored the opener in the 14th minute and Vincent Atingah fired from the penalty spot in the 78th minute.

Kotoko could not match the defensive strength of the Tarkwa-based outfit after conceding in the first half.

The Reds failed to equalize and after the break, the desperation upfront created a lot of openings in their backline.

It was through one of these lapses in defensive play that resulted in a penalty for the visitors.

And Atingah, an experienced defender noted for his trademark penalty goals, slotted home calmly.

Kotoko will look to return to winning ways when they play Legon Cities away while Medeama host Gold Stars at Tarkwa.

Tonight, Kumasi Asante Kotoko will face a tough challenge in the BetPawa Premier League at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium against Medeama SC. This is the reverse fixture of the matchday 6 clash, which the GPL holders won 1-0 in Tarkwa.

Unfortunately, the Porcupine Warriors will be without a few first-team players for this game. Steven Mukwala and Danlad Ibrahim are on national duty and will miss the clash today.

Although Isaac Oppong has returned to the team, he is expected to start from the bench. Meanwhile, Mohammed Alhassan, Andrews Appau, and Sheriff Mohammed are expected to start in defense, with Frederick Asare also starting in goal instead of Pouaty.

Eric Zeze is likely to partner Richard Boadu and Richmond Lamptey in midfield, while Sarfo-Taylor will lead the attack with Georges Mfegue.

Forward, Isaac Oppong who has been out due to injury returns to the squad after four months for this crucial encounter together with Augustine Agyapong who was dropped from the Black Meteors squad for the game against Algeria.

The Porcupines will be without Justice Blay and Rocky Dwamena who was excellent in the club’s game against Samartex. Also the Reds enter the game without their top-scorer Steven Mukwala who is on national duty with the Ugandan national team. 

This fixture would define if the Porcupine Warriors can push for the title. Kotoko can claim a place within top-four with victory but they will have to expect a stern test.

Karela United responded to their recent poor form with an impressive 3-0 victory over 10-man Hearts of Oak at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park.

The defeat dealt a significant blow to Hearts of Oak’s title aspirations, and it was their worst loss of the season so far.

Karela United’s goals from Owusu Boakye, Konadu Yiadom, and Richard Berko sealed their victory, propelling them from the brink of the relegation zone to 11th place in the standings.

Fatawu Mohammed, former Hearts of Oak captain, was instrumental in Karela United’s win, creating two of the three goals. Boakye headed in Fatawu’s cross to give Karela United the lead in the 17th minute, and Konadu Yiadom doubled the lead by converting another Fatawu cross.

Hearts of Oak’s chances of a comeback were severely hampered when Rashid Okine was sent off for a foul on Abdul Ayeh just before halftime.

In the second half, Karela United remained in control, and Berko completed their win with a stylish counterattacking goal in the 87th minute.

Karela United will play King Faisal in their next game, while Hearts of Oak will look to get back to winning ways against Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium.
