Kotoko’s Albert Amoah joins Al Ahly Benghazi after Confederation Cup exit

0

Libyan Premier League side Al Ahly Benghazi have announced the signing of Ghanaian striker Albert Amoah from Asante Kotoko.

The confirmation came in a Facebook post moments after Kotoko’s crushing 5-1 defeat to Wydad Athletic Club in the Caf Confederation Cup on Friday night in Morocco.

Amoah, 23, joined Kotoko from Accra Great Olympics ahead of the 2024/25 season on a three-year deal running through June 30, 2027. He scored twice against Nigeria’s Kwara United to help the Ghanaian side progress from the first preliminary round before they fell to the Moroccan champions on a 6-1 aggregate.

Kotoko later corroborated Al Ahly’s announcement with a statement on their social media platforms, confirming the permanent transfer.

“We can confirm the permanent transfer of forward Albert Amoah to Libyan side AL AHLY BENGHAZI,” the club said.

“Asante Kotoko is grateful to Albert for his services to the club and his achievements with us. We wish him the very best for the future.”

The move marks Amoah’s first venture abroad and comes as Al Ahly reinforce their attack for the new campaign, while Kotoko turn attention to regrouping after their early continental exit.

2025/26 CAF CC: Dominant Wydad eliminate Kotoko with 6–1 aggregate win

0

Asante Kotoko’s hopes of reaching the 2025/26 Caf Confederation Cup group stage ended in disappointment after suffering a 5–1 thrashing at the hands of Wydad Casablanca in Morocco on Friday, bowing out 6–1 on aggregate following a 1–0 home loss in the first leg.

The Porcupine Warriors were stunned within the opening minute at the Mohammed V Stadium when Hamza Hannouri fired Wydad ahead to set the tone for a difficult evening.

Kotoko briefly rallied and levelled the match in the 18th minute through Samba Gilbani, who converted neatly from close range to offer a glimmer of hope. But the Moroccans quickly reasserted their dominance as Aziz Ki restored their lead on 26 minutes, capitalising on space down the right channel to finish a flowing move.

After the interval, Wydad dictated play and repeatedly forced errors from the tiring Ghanaian side. Their pressure yielded two penalties — the first dispatched by Thembinkosi Lorch in the 54th minute and the second by Oussama Zemraoui six minutes from time — before Mohamed Bouchouari added a fifth in stoppage time to complete the rout.

The defeat exposed Kotoko’s defensive frailties and lack of control over two legs, with Wydad’s superior quality and game management proving decisive.

With their continental campaign over, Asante Kotoko will now turn focus to the ongoing 2025/26 Ghana Premier League (GPL) and MTN FA Cup competitions to seek a route back to Africa next season.

Morocco beats Argentina to win 2025 U20 World Cup

0

On a cool evening in Santiago, Chile, football history was rewritten, not by one of the sport’s traditional powerhouses, but by a team of fearless, hungry young lions from North Africa.

Morocco’s U20 national team stunned the world on Sunday night, defeating six-time champions Argentina 2–0 to win the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup, a triumph that will be remembered for generations.

In doing so, the Atlas Cubs became only the second African nation ever to lift the trophy, following in the footsteps of Ghana’s Black Satellites, who blazed the trail in 2009.

Every great triumph has its hero, and Morocco found theirs in Yassir Zabiri — a name that will now echo through the annals of African football.

Just 12 minutes into the final, the gifted playmaker stood over a free kick nearly 25 yards out. With a delicate touch and unshakable confidence, he curled the ball over the wall and into the top corner. The stadium gasped. The Atlas Cubs led.

Fifteen minutes later, Zabiri struck again. This time, it was a moment of pure teamwork, Othmane Maamma dancing down the left wing before sliding in a perfect pass. Zabiri met it first-time, burying the shot low into the net.

From then on, Morocco’s composure told the story. Their defense — anchored by Yassine Koukouh and Ilyas El Madani — absorbed every wave of Argentine pressure. Goalkeeper Anas Tazi was flawless, denying several goal-bound efforts.

When the final whistle blew, the Moroccan bench erupted. Players fell to their knees, some in tears, others sprinting across the pitch in disbelief. The Atlas Cubs had done it.

This triumph was no fluke. Morocco’s path to glory was built on courage, structure, and a quiet belief that something special was brewing.

From the opening day, they played with heart and flair, defeating giants along the way:

2–0 vs Spain

2–1 vs Brazil

0–1 vs Mexico

2–1 vs South Korea

3–1 vs USA

1–1 vs France (5–4 on penalties)

2–0 vs Argentina (Final)

Each match tested them differently — resilience against Mexico, attacking brilliance versus Brazil, and ice-cold nerve in the penalty shootout win over France.

By the time they reached the final, the Atlas Cubs looked unstoppable.

This win goes beyond a single match. It represents years of investment in youth football and the vision of the Moroccan Football Federation, which has built one of Africa’s best development programs at the Mohammed VI Football Complex.

It’s a story of structure meeting passion — of young African players finally being given the stage to shine and the tools to succeed.

Sixteen years after Ghana’s triumph in Egypt, Africa has another world champion.

As the players lifted the trophy under the Chilean night sky, red and green confetti raining down, you could almost hear the echoes of a continent celebrating.

2025/26 GPL Matchday 5 Report: Hearts of Oak and Heart of Lions share the spoils in stalemate

Hearts of Oak and Heart of Lions played out a goalless draw in a tightly contested Premier League match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, as both sides extended their unbeaten runs in the competition.

In a match defined by discipline and defensive organisation, Hearts of Oak dominated possession with 54% of the ball and looked the more adventurous of the two sides. However, their inability to convert chances proved costly as the resolute Lions backline stood firm throughout the 90 minutes.

The Phobians created the better opportunities, registering 10 shots with three on target, while Heart of Lions,  content to sit deep and counterattack, managed just four attempts without testing the stand-in Hearts goalkeeper. Despite the absence of first-choice shot-stopper Benjamin Asare, who was on international duty with the Black Stars, Hearts’ defence remained composed under pressure and effectively neutralised Lions’ attacking threat.

The draw sees both teams maintain their unbeaten starts to the season, underlining their solid early form. Hearts of Oak will take encouragement from another clean sheet and their continued defensive strength, while Heart of Lions can be satisfied with securing a valuable away point against one of the league’s powerhouses.

Both sides now turn their attention to their upcoming fixtures as they look to build on their promising starts in what is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive Premier League campaign.

Ghana’s Antoine Semenyo wins PFA Premier League Fans’ Player of the Month for September

Ghana and Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo has been chosen by fans as the PFA Premier League Player of the Month for September after a string of excellent games.

The 25-year-old has had an outstanding beginning to the year, playing every single minute of his team’s league matches.

He was a key part of their attack, netting six times and setting up three other goals during Bournemouth’s undefeated month.

His combination of physical strength, speed, and accuracy has established him as one of the league’s most impactful players this season.

He won the public vote against other well-known players like Erling Haaland, Martin Zubimendi, Ryan Gravenberch, Nick Pope, and Omar Alderete.

This recognition represents another step forward in his rapid development since his transfer from Bristol City in 2023.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams open to Nketiah and Hudson-Odoi joining Black Stars

Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, says he is open to supporting efforts to integrate players like Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi into the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Adams said the final decision on player selection rests solely with the technical team.

“Every Ghanaian who can play has a chance to go to the World Cup if the coach decides,” he said.

Eddie Nketiah

Adams also commented on discussions about recalling former players, including Baba Rahman, stressing that no player would be excluded based on past involvement.

His remarks come after Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Comoros in Accra, which sealed qualification for next year’s World Cup.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Mohammed Kudus’ goal ensured the Black Stars’ fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage since their debut in 2006.

Ghana edge Comoros to top Group I, seal 2026 World Cup spot

Ghana sealed qualification for the 2026 Fifa World Cup after defeating Comoros 1-0 in their final Group I qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday night.

The Black Stars’ place at the top of the group was confirmed after Mali’s 4-1 win over Madagascar, which left the latter six points behind.

The result ensured Otto Addo’s side booked a fifth World Cup appearance, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ghana dominated possession in the early exchanges as Comoros looked to threaten on the counter. Despite sustained pressure, the hosts struggled to convert their chances, with Jordan Ayew coming closest in the first half after a solo run ended in a wayward finish.

After a goalless opening period, Mohammed Kudus broke the deadlock two minutes into the second half, slotting home from close range a pass from Thomas Partey in the 47th minute.

The Black Stars controlled the tempo thereafter, keeping Comoros pinned back for much of the half. The visitors pressed late for an equaliser but were denied by Ghana’s disciplined defence led by Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Salisu.

Addo’s men saw out the contest to complete a successful qualifying campaign, finishing with 25 points from 10 matches, including eight wins, one draw and one defeat.

2025/26 GPL Matchday 5 Report: Aduana fight back to beat Bechem United as Karela’s perfect home record ends

The Premier League matchday 5 delivered a weekend full of drama, resilience and decisive performances across the country, as Aduana FC, Hohoe United and FC Samartex recorded important victories, while Karela United’s perfect home record came to an end.

Aduana FC 2-1 Bechem United

Aduana FC produced a spirited second-half comeback to defeat Bechem United 2–1 at the Nana Agyemang Badu I Park in Dormaa Ahenkro on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors stunned the home crowd in the 27th minute when Darlvin Yeboah capitalized on a rare defensive lapse to give Bechem the lead. Aduana, however, responded just before halftime as captain Alex Boakye rose highest to nod home an equalizer from a corner.

The Fire Boys dominated proceedings after the break and were finally rewarded in the 88th minute when Emmanuel Marfo, in red-hot form, struck his third goal of the season to seal all three points. The win preserved Aduana’s 100% home record this campaign, while Bechem United’s search for their first win of the season continues.

Hohoe United 2-0 Swedru All Blacks

Hohoe United extended their winning run to two matches after a convincing 2–0 victory over Swedru All Blacks at the Hohoe Sports Stadium.

The hosts took control early, with Kwame Paul breaking the deadlock in the 26th minute before skipper Safianu Osman doubled the advantage just before halftime. Despite a spirited fightback from All Blacks after the break, Hohoe’s goalkeeper Kwaku Musah stood tall to preserve a clean sheet.

Hohoe now sit sixth on the league table with eight points, while Swedru All Blacks remain winless in three games, slipping to 14th position.

Karela United 1-1 Berekum Chelsea

Karela United’s perfect home record was halted after they were held to a 1–1 draw by Berekum Chelsea at the Aliu Mahama Stadium.

Bless Ege gave the hosts an early lead from the penalty spot in the 9th minute, but Chelsea responded in the 36th minute through a set-piece that exposed Karela’s defensive lapses.

Chelsea, led by coach Samuel Boadu, left Tamale with a valuable point, extending their unbeaten run to two matches.

Young Apostles 2-0 Basake Holy Stars

Young Apostles continued their impressive early-season form with a comfortable 2–0 victory over Basake Holy Stars.

Hussein Issah and Ramzy Abubakar were on target as the home side cruised to their third win of the campaign, moving up to third on the table. Holy Stars, on the other hand, slipped into the relegation zone after a second defeat of the season.

FC Samartex 1996 2-1 Eleven Wonders

At the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, FC Samartex edged Eleven Wonders 2–1 in a hard-fought contest.

Forward Emmanuel Mamah struck twice—first in the 21st minute and again eight minutes after halftime—to give the Timber Giants a commanding lead. Eden Kofi Asamoah pulled one back for Wonders in the 81st minute, but it proved too little, too late.

The result lifts Samartex to fourth place, while Wonders remain rooted to the bottom of the table and still without a win this season.

2025/26 GPL Matchday 5 Report: Nations FC hold Asante Kotoko as Vision FC thrash Gold Stars

Nations FC and Asante Kotoko played out a goalless draw in their Premier League Matchday 5 encounter at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex on Saturday, in what proved to be an entertaining but evenly contested fixture.

Both sides created chances in an engaging display of attacking football, but neither could find a breakthrough as the points were shared.

The hosts came into the game on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Medeama SC in Tarkwa last weekend , their second loss of the campaign. With only five points from five matches (W1, D2, L2), Nations FC have endured one of their slowest starts since joining the top flight in 2023. They currently sit in the bottom half of the table, having scored three goals and conceded four.

Despite their mixed start, Nations FC have maintained an impressive record against the Porcupine Warriors, remaining unbeaten in their last three home meetings (W1, D2) while keeping three clean sheets in the last four league encounters between the sides.

Asante Kotoko remain one of just four unbeaten teams in the league this season, as they continue to build momentum under their new campaign.

In Tema, Vision FC produced a commanding 3-0 victory over Bibiani Gold Stars at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex, making it back-to-back wins for Nana Agyemang’s side.

The visitors, reigning league champions, started brightly and came close early on, forcing goalkeeper Kwame Aziz into a fine save just eight minutes in. But Vision FC took full control after the interval.

A brilliant brace from Abdul Naseru Sumaila put the hosts firmly in command, opening the scoring in the 55th minute before adding his second in the 84th minute. Substitute Sherif Mohammed Iddrisu then came off the bench to seal the victory with a well-taken strike in stoppage time.

The win lifts Vision FC to fifth place in the standings with eight points from five games, reflecting their growing confidence after a strong start to the season.

For Bibiani Gold Stars, it’s now back-to-back defeats, leaving them in 10th place with six points. The Miners will look to respond when they return home to host Heart of Lions in their next fixture.

2025/26 GPL Matchday 5 Report: Medeama beat Dreams FC with late drama to go top

Medeama SC climbed to the top of the Premier League after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over Dreams FC at the TNA Stadium in Tarkwa on Friday evening.

A hero-turned-villain moment from Christian Owusu, who scored an own goal deep into stoppage time, handed the Mauve and Yellow all three points and extended their impressive home record.

Medeama began brightly and took a deserved lead in the 19th minute when Abdul Salam finished off a flowing team move to crown a dominant spell of possession. However, the visitors gradually found their rhythm and drew level just before halftime, with Christian Owusu turning home from close range in the 45th minute.

Dreams FC, who are still searching for their first win of the season, defended resolutely in the second half and looked set to claim a valuable away point. But their resistance was broken deep into stoppage time, Christian Owusu scored an unfortunate own goal, sealing a hard-fought victory for the home side.

The defeat leaves Dreams FC winless in five matches (L4, D1), piling pressure on Coach Winfred Dormon as his side struggle to find consistency. Medeama, on the other hand, continue their impressive home form and move top of the table with the victory.

The defending champions will next face FC Samartex 1996 in a Western Derby, while Dreams FC will host Nations FC as they search for their first win of the campaign.
