Abednego Tetteh, Bibiani Gold Stars foward has emerged as the leading goal scorer of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season, impressively finding the net 18 times.

Despite joining the team later in the season, the 32-year-old showcased his exceptional scoring ability by scoring 16 goals in 19 matches, including two goals during his time with King Faisal earlier in the season.

Tetteh faced tough competition from Hafiz Konkoni of Bechem United and Sampson Eduku of Tamale City, who scored 15 and 14 goals respectively.

However, it was Tetteh’s consistent performance and goal-scoring prowess that earned him the coveted golden boot award.

His contributions as a former Hearts of Oak player played a crucial role in guiding Bibiani Gold Stars to an impressive fifth-place finish, accumulating 49 points.

The team finished behind the league champions, Medeama SC, as well as Aduana Stars, Bechem United, and Asante Kotoko.

Throughout the season, Tetteh featured in 29 Ghana Premier League matches and showcased his talent by winning four Man of the Match awards. Notably, he ended the season in outstanding form, scoring seven goals in his last four games, further solidifying his position at the top of the goal-scoring chart.

While Tetteh’s goal tally falls short of the previous season’s winners, Yaw Annor and Ishmael Addo, who both set a record of 22 goals, as well as former Kotoko striker Frank Mbella, who scored 21 times, his individual achievements remain highly impressive.

Tamale City’s hopes of retaining their Ghana Premier League status were dashed on the final day of the season when they were defeated by Medeama at Akoon Park on Sunday afternoon.

Medeama’s 3-0 victory confirmed them as champions, while Tamale City were relegated to the second tier, ending their brief stint in the top flight.

Tamale City failed to secure the necessary points to stay afloat in their first season after promotion, leaving them with the daunting task of regrouping and aiming for a quick return.

On the same day, relegated Kotoku Royals and King Faisal had mixed results. Kotoku Royals were defeated at home by Karela United, while King Faisal defeated Real Tamale United.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak were able to avoid relegation by holding Berekum Chelsea to a goalless draw. The 21-time champions showed tenacity to secure the crucial point required to maintain their top-flight status.

In other matches, dethroned champions Kotoko were held to a goalless draw, Aduana Stars defeated Bechem United, Great Olympics secured their safety with a 2-1 home win against Nsoatreman, Legon Cities won a thrilling five-goal encounter against Samartex, and Bibiani Gold Stars and Accra Lions played out a goalless draw.

As 21-time champions of the league, Hearts of Oak faced the risk of relegation to the lower division if they had suffered a defeat against Berekum Chelsea. However, they managed to secure a crucial point away from home, effectively saving themselves from the perils of relegation.

Before the final game on Sunday, the Phobians were positioned 11th in the 18-team league with 45 points, merely 3 points away from safety. Their fate hinged on the outcomes of the last round of matches, which added to the anticipation and tension surrounding their survival in the league.

Accra Hearts of Oak, being one of the founding clubs of the league, have maintained an illustrious record of never being relegated since the inception of the Ghanaian elite competition in 1956. However, their established foundation of superiority was momentarily shaken, only to be salvaged by their performance on the final day of the season.

Meanwhile, in Tarkwa, Medeama Sporting Club secured a momentous 3-0 victory over the newly promoted Tamale City FC, clinching the 2022-2023 Ghana Premier League title for the first time in their history.

Medeama has officially been crowned champions of Ghana and will be the country’s representative in the upcoming CAF Champions League.

The Yellow and Mauves secured their first-ever Ghana Premier League title by defeating Tamale City at Akoon Park on Sunday.

This league triumph not only brings glory to Medeama but also ends a 46-year trophy drought in the Western Region for the two-time FA Cup winners.

The last time a team from the Western Region claimed the Ghana Premier League title was in 1977 when Sekondi Hasaacas emerged as champions.

Medeama needed only a single point to secure the title, but they went on to achieve a comfortable 3-0 victory over Tamale City, a result that also led to Tamale City’s relegation.

As the champions, based in Tarkwa, Medeama will have the opportunity to represent Ghana in the prestigious CAF Champions League, provided they meet the demands set by CAF.

The last time Medeama participated in continental competition was in 2015 when they competed in the CAF Confederations Cup campaign.
