Amos Frimpong urges Asante Kotoko management to give coaches time to succeed
Amos Frimpong, the former captain of Asante Kotoko, has appealed to the club’s management to abandon the habit of frequently changing coaches, as it has a negative impact on the club’s progress.
Over the past three years, the Premier League giants have had seven different coaches at the helm of the team. In the recently concluded season, for example, they parted ways with Seydou Zerbo before the season ended and appointed Abdulai Gazale as an interim coach.
Frimpong, who left Kotoko after an eight-year tenure in 2019 to join Guinean side AS Kaloum Stars, believes that these frequent changes hinder consistency, which is vital for the club’s success.
“I want to tell the management that going forward, next season, the coach we appoint must end the season with the team. Changing a coach in the middle of the season doesn’t help because every coach has his own formation, and has his kind of players that he needs,” he told Kessben Sports.
U23 AFCON: How Ghana could line up against Morocco without Afriyie Barnieh, Simba, others, Yeboah to start
In the second Group A match of the TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Tuesday, June 27, Ghana will face host nation Morocco at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The Black Meteors are determined to secure a spot in the semifinals of the competition. They started off with a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Congo and will guarantee their progression to the knockout stages with a win against Morocco. The Moroccan team, on the other hand, emerged triumphant in their opening game by defeating Guinea 2-1 after coming from behind.
Ghana’s head coach, Ibrahim Tanko, is expected to make minor adjustments to the lineup that brought success against Congo.
Promising goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad is likely to retain his position as the last line of defense.
At right-back, Aaron Essel is expected to start, while Samuel Ashie Quaye, who returns from suspension, is likely to replace Edmond Arko Mensah at left-back. Terry Yegbe and David Oppong are expected to continue as the center-back duo.
In the midfield, Dominic Nsobila and Emmanuel Essiam are anticipated to maintain their positions. They will be joined by Abass Samari Salifu, who will take the place of Sylvester Simba.

Medeama plot move for Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey
Medeama SC has expressed their interest in signing Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey for the upcoming season.
The Yellow and Mauves are keen to strengthen their midfield by acquiring the talented player from the Porcupine Warriors.
Medeama has been actively scouting for high-quality players to bolster their squad for both domestic and international competitions in the upcoming season.
As the reigning champions of Ghana, Medeama will be representing the country in the CAF Champions League, and they are determined to make their team strong as they compete against top teams on the continent.
According to reports from Kessben FM, Medeama’s coach, Evans Adotey, is a big admirer of Richmond Lamptey, who previously played for Inter Allies. Adotey sees Lamptey as a valuable addition to their squad for the 2023/24 season.
However, Medeama has not yet officially approached Asante Kotoko with a bid for the midfielder’s services.
Richmond Lamptey’s current contract with Asante Kotoko is set to expire in the summer of 2024.
U-23 AFCON: Morocco captain Abde Ezzalzouli to miss the Black Meteors clash on Tuesday
Abde Ezzalzouli, the promising FC Barcelona youngster, is expected to be absent from the second group stage match of the U-23 AFCON against Black Meteors on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, in Morocco.
In a crucial encounter, the host nation will face Ghana, with both teams vying for a victory that would help them advance to the next stage of the competition.
Media reports suggest that Barcelona FC has instructed the Moroccan team to exclude Abde from the game due to injury concerns.
The player delivered an impressive performance in the Group A opener, scoring a goal and earning the Man of the Match award in a 2-1 victory against Guinea.
Ghana, too, started their campaign on a high note, securing a thrilling 3-2 win over Congo on Sunday. Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring for Ghana, and substitute Emmanuel Yeboah netted two goals, leading the Black Meteors to a three-goal advantage. This triumph has propelled Ghana to the top of their group.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT).
2023 Ashanti Regional Inter-Schools and Colleges Boys’ soccer qualifiers start Thursday; Checkout the new groups
The first phase of the 2023 Ashanti Regional Inter-Schools and Colleges boys’ soccer competition will now commence on Thursday, June 29, 2023, across different centres.
The competition was initially slated for Monday, June 26 but was postponed to sort out some issues concerning some banned schools including Kumasi High School and OT Akropong.
Both schools have been permitted to participate in this year’s competition.
A total of 134 schools will compete against each other in the qualifiers, divided into 32 groups with each comprising of four teams.
The winners only will cruise into the main competition which is expected to come off at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Defending champions Kumasi High School have been placed in Group 3 alongside Asare Bediako STS, Dadease Agric SHS and Wiafe Akenten SHS.
It would be recalled that the final of the last edition was cancelled due to legal issues.

“I laughed when I saw George Afriyie’s video; he’s not a threat to Kurt Okraku” – Albert Commey
Popular football administrator Albert Aryeetey Commey has stated emphatically that he is not worried about the perceived threat that George Afriyie poses to Kurt Okraku’s chances of retaining the Ghana Football Association presidential position.
According to the former Aduana Stars CEO, Afriyie is no match for Okraku because he has done nothing to merit such a role, noting he failed in every opportunity he got under Kwesi Nysntakyi.
“I saw that tape, and I laughed. I laughed because I want him to get the opportunity one day and see what he can do because I have worked with him and in the four years he had to be the vice president of the GFA, he should have shown everybody what he is capable of doing,” he told Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM.
“I remember Mr. Nyantakyi giving him the opportunity to organize the WAFU tournament, and he should tell us what happened. He is my friend, so I do not want to say much.
“He is no threat to Kurt Okraku. Even the devil has a supporter, so he can have people that follow him.”
George Afriyie announced on Sunday his intention to run in the 2023 presidential elections of the local football governing body.
In his announcement, Afriyie emphasized the need to break free from repetitive mistakes and adopt a practical approach to problem-solving.
He was GFA’s Vice President from 2015 to 2018.
The GFA has yet to announce the roadmap for the next GFA elections, although Kurt Okraku’s tenure will end in October.
However, the association is scheduled to hold its 29th Ordinary Congress on Monday, July 10, 2023, at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.
It is expected that the roadmap for the election will be released.

“He could even be worse than Adiyiah” – Charles Taylor sends career warning to ‘complacent’ Afriyie Barnieh
Charles Taylor, the former striker of Hearts of Oak, has offered advice to Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, urging him to make adjustments in order to avoid future setbacks in his career.
Taylor cautioned that the FC Zurich forward could suffer a similar fate to Dominic Adiyiah, a former Black Satellites player who experienced great success at the U-20 World Cup in 2009 but failed to fulfill his potential.
Barnieh, as captain, led the Black Satellites to victory in the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in 2021 and subsequently earned a call-up to the senior team for the 2022 World Cup. However, he has faced criticism for his recent performances, with the latest backlash following Ghana’s win against Congo in the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“He has lost focus on the field. If he doesn’t get a good psychologist to psych him well he would even be worse than what we are seeing. You can just compare his previous performances to now, he could even be worse than Adiyiah,” Taylor told Angel TV.
Taylor further highlighted that Barnieh’s situation is concerning, noting his limited playing time since joining FC Zurich. He emphasized the need for Barnieh to focus on his future and avoid dwelling on past accomplishments.
“Adiyiah’s situation is even better. How many matches has Afriyie Barnieh managed to play since he switched to FC Zurich? Let’s ask ourselves, what happened to him when he got to Zurich. He needs to be advised on focusing on moving forward and stop living on past glories. He is now starting which is why he needs to do more,” he added.
During the U-23 AFCON match against Congo, the 22-year-old forward was substituted at halftime and replaced by Emmanuel Yeboah, who played a crucial role in all three goals as Ghana secured a 3-2 victory.

In his announcement, Afriyie emphasised the need to break free from repetitive mistakes and adopt a practical approach to problem-solving.
He said, “We need to move on from repetitive mistakes towards a more practical approach to solving problems. In these challenging times, I come in as a beacon of hope believing in the immense potential of Ghana Football to rise above adversities.”
“I offer a vision for a future where our national teams will continuously compete at the highest level. Our local clubs and the league will thrive and our young talents are given the equal opportunities they deserve,” he added.
This marks his second attempt at the presidency, having conceded defeat to the incumbent Kurt Okraku in the previous election. With Okraku expected to seek re-election, an exciting contest is on the horizon between the two and other candidates.
Afriyie’s extensive experience in Ghanaian football serves as a significant advantage in his bid for the presidency. His involvement in various teams, including his notable tenure as chairman of the Black Stars management committee, has solidified his reputation and deepened his understanding of the local football landscape.
