Don’t rush for a trophy rather build Kotoko – Otumfuo tells Coach Ogum

The Life Patron of the Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has directed the Club’s head coach, Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum to focus on building the club before anything else.

He advised the coach against getting anxious for a title or trophy as the Club remains in tatters.

“Don’t be anxious to win a cup with the Club. Instead, focus on building it. If the players are able to win a trophy, I am fine with it but don’t rush for a cup. I will be glad if you win an African Cup but my focus is on the development of the Club.”

This, he said during a meeting with the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Club, players and the technical team at the Manhyia Palace on Monday, August 7, 2023.

He said the coach will be retained for as long as possible, only if he delivers on his mandate and develops the club. He assured him of the needed room to work and charged the IMC to do same.

Dr Ogum in an address expressed his appreciation to the King for entrusting him with one of his assets.

“We have been given the mental picture of what Otumfuo wants the Club to become and we will work to bring it to that point,” he said.

Asante Kotoko head coach Prosper Ogum calls for unity ahead of 2023/24 season

In anticipation of the forthcoming season, Asante Kotoko’s head coach, Prosper Ogum, has fervently appealed for unity within the team.

With an unchangeable commitment to achieving success on the field, Coach Ogum believes that a united front will be the key to unlocking the club’s true potential.

Emphasizing the significance of collective effort and camaraderie, he aims to instill a sense of cohesion among players, staff, and fans.

The Porcupine Warriors failed to defend their league title and finished 4th on the league table with 52 points. The club’s board and management were both dissolved by Manhyia at the end of the season.

An interim management committee was constituted and Dr Prosper Ogum was reappointed as head coach.

Speaking at his official unveiling coach Ogum said:

“Every organisation that wants to succeed does so on one condition and that’s unity,”

“I want everybody to come on board and let’s pick the lessons and screen which one to repeat and which one to let go and I am convinced that we can catch up with the AHLY’S.

“Let’s forgive and forget.”

Asante Kotoko coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum is delighted following his return to the club.

Narteh Ogum had his first stint with the club during the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season where he led the team to Premier League glory.

However, he surprisingly parted ways with the club after just a season with the club due to a misunderstanding between himself and the then Nana Yaw Amponsah-led management.

Following the dissolution of the board of directors and the management, a four-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) has been named with the inclusion of Prosper Narteh Ogum.

The former WAFA boss was officially unveiled today at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Speaking at his unveiling, Narteh Ogum expressed his joy following his return to the club.

“I am overly excited and overwhelmed by this opportunity and nothing else comes closer, probably the day I got married but I have to say I am excited to be here again,” he said.

Prosper Narteh Ogum will lead the team as they begin pre-season on Tuesday at Beposo in Kumasi ahead of the 2023/24 Ghana football season that get underway in September later this year.


Kotoko will open their campaign with a home game against Heart of Lions at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Other members of the IMC include Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua; the Kontomponiaferehene and a chartered accountant, former Black Stars coach Appiah, and Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi, as the Administrative Manager.

Asante Kotoko’s head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, has emphasized his goal to elevate the club’s competitiveness both at the domestic and international levels.

Ogum, 45, previously led the Porcupine Warriors to victory in the Ghana Premier League during the 2021/22 season. However, a controversial departure from the club before the start of the following season occurred due to reported disagreements with management.

Having officially returned to Kotoko and been unveiled on Monday, August 7, 2023, Ogum shared his aspirations to rejuvenate the team’s competitive edge within Ghana and beyond.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Ogum stated, “I’m overly excited and overwhelmed about this opportunity and nothing else comes close, probably the day I got married, but I have to say that I am excited to be here again,” Ogum said.

He outlined his initial focus, saying, “My first year is to put together a very formidable team that can compete both domestically and internationally. However, you can’t be at Kotoko and not think of bringing success.”

Following a disappointing previous season that led to a fourth-place finish, the Porcupine Warriors are determined to reclaim their competitive stature under Ogum’s leadership.

Medeama Sporting Club, the reigning Ghanaian champions, has strengthened its squad by signing 29-year-old Zimbabwean international Kudakwashe Mahachi as a winger.

The signing comes after successful negotiations between both parties and provides a boost for Medeama ahead of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League campaign and the upcoming football season.

Mahachi, who previously played for notable clubs such as SuperSports United, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows, Highlanders, and Chicken Inn FC, brings valuable experience to the team.

He has also represented the Zimbabwean National team since 2014, making 44 appearances and scoring 5 goals.

Mahachi’s addition follows other acquisitions by Medeama, including Kamaradin Mamudu, Benjamin Bature, Ibrahim Larbi, and Richard Akrofi. The team’s preparations have seen them face setbacks in friendly matches, including a 1-0 loss to ASKO de Kara from Togo and a 3-2 defeat to Ghana Premier League newcomers Nations FC.

Despite these challenges, Medeama is gearing up to face Remo Stars of Nigeria in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, hosting the first leg in Cape Coast, Ghana, before traveling to Nigeria for the second leg.

Wilson Burton Asare, who happens to be the biological father of Ghanaian international midfielder Clifford Aboagye, has been appointed as the second assistant coach for Asante Kotoko.

Wilson Asare is now part of the technical team of the Porcupines, which is under the leadership of Prosper Narteh Ogum as the head coach and David Ocloo as the first assistant coach. This development comes as the team gears up for the upcoming Ghana Premier League season.

Asante Kotoko to unveil Prosper Narteh Ogum as new head coach today

Ghanaian giants, Asante Kotoko have confirmed that former head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has returned to the club again as they unveil him Monday morning.

In 2021, the gaffer’s position as tactician for former Ghana Premier League team WAFA SC came to an end was hired to serve as head coach of the Porcupine Warriors.

He led the Reds to win the Ghana Premier League championship in his first campaign.

However, he left Kotoko after winning the league for them due to a misunderstanding between him and the then Nana Yaw Amponsah-led management.

Asante Kotoko is bringing Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum back as a result of a request from club owner Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II.

In an official communique from the Kumasi-based club on Sunday night, it said the gaffer will be unveiled as Asante Kotoko’s head coach on Monday, August 7.


The ceremony will be held in the Conference Room of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The club is scheduled to commence its preseason activities on Tuesday at Beposo in the Ashanti Region.
