Morocco stays top while Ghana maintain position in latest FIFA Rankings; check the 15 Highest-ranked African countries

FIFA has officially published its quarterly rankings with some interesting moves for African teams on the global rankings.

Morocco have moved two places up to position 13, remaining the leading African nation in the rankings while reigning  African champions Senegal dropped two places from position 18 but remain amongst the top 20 in the world as they occupy position 20.

Tunisia is now amongst the top 30 in the world after moving up to position 29, while Mali and Cote d’Ivoire both move two places up to 49 and 50 to break into the top 50 ranked sides, replacing Greece and Paraguay respectively. 

As a result, CAF now has 9 teams in the top 50, which is two more compared to the previous rankings.

Meanwhile, Guinea-Bissau made the biggest improvement in the rankings, moving up six places to position 106.

It should be noted that Argentina is still the top the ranked team as they occupy number one ahead of France and Brazil.

Asante Kotoko duo return to training ahead of GoldStars duel

Asante Kotoko’s Rocky Dwamena and Steven Mukwala Dese are set to make their return for the upcoming clash against Bibiani Goldstars on Saturday, September 23, 2023.

The duo was unavailable for Asante Kotoko’s league opener against Hearts of Lions at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi last weekend due to personal reasons.

Their absence was noticeable in the game against Hearts of Lions, which ended in a goalless draw despite a strong showing from the team in front of a crowd of over six thousand supporters.

However, Rocky Dwamena and Steven Mukwala Dese have been actively participating in Asante Kotoko’s training sessions throughout the week, and they will be ready to travel to Bibiani this weekend.

The return of these two players provides a significant boost to the Asante Kotoko squad and offers more options for coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum ahead of the Bibiani Goldstars fixture at the challenging Dun’s Park in Bibiani.

Asante Kotoko is determined to secure a victory against Bibiani Goldstars at the Dun’s Park to make up for the draw against Hearts of Lions last weekend.

Meanwhile, defensive midfielder Justice Blay will remain sidelined due to an injury he sustained during the team’s pre-season campaign.

“I don’t want to be Ghana FA president” – Randy Abbey

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Dr Randy Abbey has unequivocally stated that he has no intentions of contesting for the position of GFA president in the near future.

Abbey, who is the owner of Kpando Heart of Lions, has a long history of involvement in Ghanaian football, having served in various capacities during the tenure of former GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi, including as the Communications Director of the GFA.

Speaking in an interview, Dr. Randy Abbey made his position clear, saying, “I don’t want to be Ghana Football Association president. Not today, not tomorrow.” He emphasised that he has no aspirations to lead the country’s football fraternity as the GFA president.

Abbey is currently seeking re-election to the Executive Council in the upcoming GFA elections scheduled for October 5.

He was elected into office in 2019 and has been a key part of the success chalked by current administration led by Kurt Okrkau, who will go unopposed in the upcoming presidential election.

2023/24 GPL: Dreams FC pip Nations FC at home

Dreams FC recorded a win in their opening match of the 2023/24 betPawa Premier League after handing a 1-0 defeat to new entrants Nations FC.

Leftback Ebenezer Adade was on target for Dreams FC 10 minutes as they start this year’s campaign on a positive note.

The Dawu-based side held on to their solitary goal as the away side pushed for an equaliser but to no avail.

Dreams joins RTU, Legon Cities FC, Nsoatreman FC, FC Samartex and Berekum Chelsea FC who all recorded wins on the opening day of the 2023/24 league season.

Dreams FC will travel as guests to Bechem United FC with Nations FC set to host FC Samartex at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex on Matchday two of the season.

2023/24 GPL: Accra Lions hold Medeama at Akoon Park

Reigning betPawa Premier League Champions Medeama SC were held 2-2 at home in their opening match of the season against Accra Lions FC.

Samuel Gyimah got the opener for the away side 18 minutes into the game before Medeama SC restored parity in the 56th minute from Daniel Agbloe Lomotey’s strike.

On the 80th minute mark, Alui Mohammed found the back of the net and shot Accra Lions FC back into the lead but Jonathan Sowah scored four minutes later to ensure that the game ends in a draw.

This is the first time Medeama SC is failing to win a home match against Accra Lions at the Akoon Park in Tarkwa.

Wednesday’s game between the two sides is the third game that ended in a stalemate on the opening day of the season.

On day two, Accra Lions FC will host Legon Cities at home whereas Medeama SC travel away to Aduana FC.

2024 WAFCON Qualifier: Black Queens produce dazzling display to dismantle Rwanda

Ghana gained huge first leg advantage after hammering Rwanda 7-0 away in their 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations first qualifying round tie on Wednesday, 20 September, 2023.

A brace each from Evelyn Badu and Achiaa Anasthesia and single strikes from Doris Boaduwaa, Princella Adubea and Alice Kusi sealed the convincing win at Kigali Pelé Stadium.

The Black Queens shot into a third minute lead when striker Doris Boaduwaa headed in a corner-kick from the right side of their attack.

Six minutes later, Ghana doubled their lead when Evelyn Badu when she latched onto a through pass to finish off neatly.

Before the half hour mark, Princella Adubea beautifully headed in a perfect cross from Justice Tweneboaa.

Eight minutes after the break, Ghana made it four-nil when Alice Kusi directed home with ease a squared pass from Boaduwaa.

In the 63rd minute, Badu smashed in a low grounder from outside the box to make it five.  Three minutes later, Ghana won a penalty after Kusi was felled inside the box.

Jennifer Cudjoe stepped up and she shot wide.

Ghana did not stop the demolishing exercise bagged the sixth goal through Achiaa Anasthesia who lobbed a loose ball over and above the She-Amavubi goalkeeper.

Achiaa fortuitously scored the seventh goal after a overhead cross into the area dipped on the goal line and slipped through the hands of the Rwanda goalkeeper.

The deciding fixture will be played on 26 September 2023 in Accra with the winner of the Gambia vs Namibia

New date for 2023 Ghana FA Elections announced

Pursuant to Article 33 of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Statutes 2019, the Executive Council of the Association has decided that the Extraordinary Session of Congress (Elective Congress) shall be rescheduled to Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 9:00 o’clock in the forenoon at the Global Dream Hotel, Tamale.

The Elections Committee has announced the Official List of Candidates for the GFA Elections 2023.

In accordance with Article 33 of the GFA Statutes, the Agenda of the Congress is as follows:

– A declaration that Congress has been convened in compliance with the Statutes.

Black Meteors players donate GHS13k to ailing teammate William Essu

Players of the U-23 national team of Ghana, the Black Meteors have contributed an amount of GHS 13,000 and donated to Legon Cities goalkeeper William Essu in a heartwarming act of kindness.

The goalkeeper who was part of Ghana’s team which beat Algeria in the final round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers has been dealing with a serious medical issue for some time.

The urgency of the matter came to the known after a letter from the goalkeeper to then-Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko demanding his winning bonuses from the Algeria game went viral. There was concern that his condition would eventually be beyond repair following the death of his Legon Cities teammate Sylvester Sackey, also a goalkeeper who passed on after battling with a short illness.

Players of the Black Meteors have responded swiftly to the issue with a cash donation hoping to see the player back on his feet as fit as a feedle.

The donation follows that of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Foundation’s GHC10,000 support to the shot-stopper as well as a notable donation from the Nicholas Opoku foundation.

The player was earlier visited by the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), an entity which seeks the welfare of professional Ghanaian footballers.
